What is a Heart Health Check?
May 26, 2025
A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute consultation with your GP to assess your risk of heart attack or stroke over the next five years. This Medicare-covered check is available to all Australians aged 45 and over (or 30 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples).
During your appointment, your doctor will:
- Ask about your lifestyle, medical and family history
- Check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
- Discuss your results and steps to reduce your risk
Why It Matters
Heart disease often has no symptoms until it's serious. A Heart Health Check can:
- Detect risks early
- Guide you to healthier lifestyle changes
- Prevent life-threatening events before they happen
